Gorgeous Venice with overflowing tourists (it almost rhymes)

P1100234

Finally finally. The end of my 15 days trip, Venezia was my last stop. Waking up at 4am, took a cab to Prague airport for a flight departing at 6am. Sounded like fun especially for the fact that I looked like a zombie afterwards.  But I got the perks of being an early bird, and for the first hour I was in Venice, there were actually space around me and not just layers of people after people.

P1100437

It was also my lucky day for so many strangers extended their helping hand for a day that I was really distressed. Stranger 1 lifted my luggage up the upper head compartment, a charming married woman.

P1100222

I was starving by the time I got there, and I had my last cup of cappuccino in Italy and a ham baguette. Everything in Venice was overpriced. And with the big crowd, it wasn’t hard for me to run into familiar faces at all. It’s a small world after all!

P1100246P1100294

Basically, all of Venice looked like that, bridges, big and small, canals, big and small. Sharp buildings (just like in James Bond movies.) It was perhaps the most difficult city I have been to in terms of navigation. I crossed every bridge I saw, took every turn that came to me, and walked down every alley that my feet stumbled upon. In less than 4 turns, I was completely lost. Disorientated, surrounded by water.

P1100301P1100312

Can you believe actually having a boat, to your door and that is the only way of getting home? How could that be? It was like a parallel universe, no cars, just boats. Big and small.

P1100229P1100242

Good thing about this was I got to see the residential part of Venice, (yes, there are actually people living there full time, not just selling hats and masks on the street.) away from tourists and most of the time was just me and my minute shadow, under the almost mid-day sun.

P1100470

Eventually, I got to some sort of end and with one more step, I will be walking into the sea. My phobia for water suddenly sinked in and it took me 3 seconds to figure out that if I fell, no one would notice and I will just sink to the bottom of the ocean. Or I will float to the end of the world, joining Jack Sparrow, Captain, Jack Sparrow.

P1100384P1100463

That was when I wanted to go back into the crowd and do tourist-y things, getting to the Marco Polo Plaza. The signs were super confusing. Stranger number 2 appeared and asked if I am lost. He did not seem kind enough and I dismissed his “concerns” with a smile and quickened my pace.

P1100483P1100508

I was just passing by alleys after alleys, chapels after chapels, and canals after canals. Everywhere looked exactly the same. Stranger number 3 tapped on my shoulder not long after and spoke to me in Italian holding out 15 euros. Oh my, I must have dropped it somewhere, I thanked the nice old man and carried on walking. That was the only cash I have on me left. It was a preventive measure against more shopping. (Thank god I would still be able to get home as I have already bought return bus ticket ;)) Learning from my mistake in Rome.

P1100481P1100477

And as my shadow disappeared, I was joined by endless tourists instead. The square was indeed rather captivating. It was unlike the Spain or Belgian squares, where all buildings kind of looked the same, here there were different kinds of architecture: corridors, clock tower, church, arches everywhere.

P1100393

P1100387

P1100400

I felt suffocated, perhaps it was the mid-day heat, or the people. When I was away by myself an hour ago, I felt insecure, and then when I was enveloped by people, I felt unease. How contradicting? So where else should I be really?

P1100336

P1100419

Ah, perhaps I should be like those seagulls, resting on ancient statues’ heads, as if that’s their territory. Removed from the crowd, but still watching closely. Hey, just one more spot left for me on the far left!

P1100421

Anyone see what I saw? Those glaring eyes under bold eyebrows, watching the postman. The huge almost wolf-size “pet” resting by, being protective of his master.

P1100492P1100432

Afterwards, I went into the glorious church, but did not take any photos. I was tired from walking  4 hours straight and I sat inside for  30 minutes, just absorbing the atmosphere and catching my breath. Perhaps there really is something about churches that calm people. Is it the flickering candle lights? The elevated dome shaped ceiling, perfectly smooth arches, solemn religious paintings on the wall, subtle sunshine through the miraculous  windows or the faint scent of …incense I think?

P1100480

After that I wandered off to a park with a sparse number of people, and wrote my postcards. One to myself was lost and I completely forgot what it was that I wanted to tell myself. It was quite sad not knowing where my personal message from past self to present self is now 😦

P1100497

Venice was such an artistic place, and I am not even referring to their famous glasses. I stumbled upon a very special photographic exhibition in a worn out house. In the 2 floors building, Latvian culture was displayed on photographs all over the walls. The photos were so vivid yet impeccably staged in a way that I was convinced these scenes, 100 rooms, actually reflected Latvian homes.

P1100521

After more walking (or perhaps getting lost is a better word), I saw the familiarly ridiculous moustache of Dali. There was an exhibition on him, The Dali Universe, and since I so regrettably missed out his museum in Barcelona, I went in although it was rather pricey (even for students!). And man, I certainly made the right decision.

P1100515

That famous melting clock, I finally understood what it symbolises: the ticking of time can be so precise, yet the speed of time really only depends on us. That’s why it’s in a liquid form. Time is not absolute. His sculptures were full of recurring images of snails and eggs and ants. These all demonstrates nature’s greatest paradoxes, soft and hard, strong and weak all in the same object. It was intoxicating to be introduced into his great mind. He was a cocky bastard and I loved him for that, like how many others did.

P1100517

That statue focused on what he was always interested in, femininity. Women’s true beauty is their mysteries. The drawers, where she store them are left ajar. He thinks these are not to be feared by men, but they should understand. hmmm.

I don’t do drugs, I am drugs. Take me, I am hallucinogenic.

There is only one difference between a madman and me. The madman thinks he is sane. I know I am mad.

I was chuckling to myself reading his oh so proud quotes of himself. No wonder people loved him so much, you have to love yourself before people grow to like you.

P1100224

I have lots to write about Venice because I went alone. People say your travel-mates are the filter between you and the local culture and surroundings. I was able to see more and go by my own pace.

P1100469

I stopped a lot just to watch people, no matter they were just walking their dogs while getting busy on their phones, or sitting/lying under the sun savoring the beautiful day.

P1100307

It was a lot of fun to be by yourself to some extent, but I could never do this all the time. It is too tiring to be alert at all times and I hate that I had no one to talk to. Stranger number 4 offered to help me take a photo when I was setting up self-timer. If I had a mate, it would be much easier 🙂

P1100460

At the end it finally occurred to me I should start finding my way back to the shabby hostel. Since I had absolutely no idea my whereabouts, I resort to a rather non-scientific method. When I walked into the heart of Venice in the morning, I was walking towards the sun… so now I just have to walk towards the sun again because it is setting… and it should be right? Luckily, I was right and after 45 minutes, I was on the bus ride heading back.

 P1100428

Prague – erm…yea just Prague.

P1090886

Why is it just Prague? Yes I was told it is gorgeous, and I believe it definitely is,,, if the weather cooperates. But when we were there it was not like that AT ALL.  The most beautiful and intriguing thing we saw was a bank… The weather was again against us and even the famous Charles Bridge failed to put us in awe.

P1090946 P1090956 P1090954

We really just went in and took photos. First time in my life to do that in a bank. The receptionist must be so used to this.

It is almost like a ritual to compare public transport here at Central Europe! Here we took the tram, and they were somewhat better than Budapest but not even near Vienna’s contemporary designs.

P1090926P1090921

P1090923

Prague food was good too, but then not as cheap as Budapest 😦 P1090880

Then of course, there’s the old town!

P1090994P1090976

Easter Carnival again! Everything was so bright colored and little kids were staging cute plays. The kids were circling the “tree” (acted by a tall boy) and eventually all were stuck to it … I was puzzled by what was going on and my companion was spot on “The first kid played around the tree, and was glued to it, and he called for help, and all other kids tried to help out but ended up glued to the tree too.” – Wow. 😉

P1090990  P1090998

Easter Tree. Eggs on Trees. It was almost as absurd as Dali’s sculptures.

P1100002P1090972

As we roamed around we passed by this little shop with overflowing goods that I did not dare step foot in; as if the moment I pushed the door all stuff would collapse on me.

P1100004 IMG_2875

Highlight of Prague! Kafka’s statue. This was hilarious, and also proof of “nothing is possible unless you at least give it a shot.” I have not been piggybacked in years, and I would not have thought that the Piggy would be my roommate 🙂 🙂

People were taking photos of us, I guess they don’t see 2 girls doing that often 😉

Angry girlfriend: See, even that girl can do that. How come you can’t? (It was in Chinese 那個女生都可以怎麼你不行?)

Poor weak boyfriend: …

Sorry boyfriend, my roommate is just super strong 🙂

P1100023

For dinner, we were at this restaurant with wifi.

Me (being smart to double check): Do you guys have wifi?

Waiter: Oh yes, but we are not an internet cafe.

Me: … erm Ok so if we eat here, we can use it , yea?

Waiter (with a smile on his face): Oh yes sure.

IMG_2880

We saw everything that is to see in one day. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Astronomical Clock in Old Town, THE BANK. haha.

P1100041

The Prague Castle was super freaky at night especially when there were only 4 people. My camera failed at night :/ but the view was actually quite nice. Very different of course, compared to the beautiful night view that I missed so dearly in Hong Kong.

P1100049 P1100093 P1100100

So there, everything checked in a day. The next day, we went again to these places, but in the morning instead. (Not really morning, but 2pm :P)

P1100124 P1100161

We saw a couple taking wedding photos, aww it was so adorably cute. Photographer was super demanding on the bride though, and she just bent lower and lower and lower…hilarious. The groom just had to stand there, how unfair.

P1100136 P1100140

I have never seen such horrifying statues outside of Churches…imagine that’s what we saw the night before! Explains why I did not dare take too many photos then …

P1100170

The sun refused to shine…sigh.

P1100186

They rolled crepes differently around here! (But I preferred the french ones more, then the Budapest ones. 🙂

P1100189 P1100190

Vienna – Part 2

P1090850

In total, we visited a whopping 7 museums in total! After The State Hall library, we went to the Globe Museum and Esperanto Museum. The next day, we made it to the Silvers Apartments, Sisi Museum (My personal favorite) and the Royal Place. Ended with the Papyrus Museum. Main point however, was that we always tea in between these museum visits.
P1090818
P1090819

The Silver exhibition was monotonous, we saw endless plates and glassware that royals used in the past. Not really worth going but I guess that’s why they had to bundle those 3 museums together. Sisi Museum on the other hand, was so thoughtfully designed and Elizabeth (Sisi was her nickname) was such a tragic character.

In fact, I came to realized the entire royal family was completely MESSED up. (I would use another stronger word if not for the fact that my space is appropriate for all ages)

P1090821

At the age of 15, she married the Emperor and due to her previous family brought up that was rather free and unstructured, she felt trapped and overwhelmed by the Royal Palace. She was obsessed with her own physical appearances because that was the only thing in her life that was within her control. She died with an 18′ inches waistline. Her first daughter died a toddler because she didn’t listen to her mom’s advise to not bring along the young kid to travel. Her youngest son committed suicide besides his mistress. Her life ended when she was assassinated in Geneva.

I am a seagull, of no land,

I call no shore my home,

I am bound to no place,

I fly from wave to wave.

That strange feeling when you don’t fit into any part of the world’s puzzle, or perhaps it forgot to leave a spot for me?

I stand alone, as on a star. Despite the unparalleled view from above, I am all but myself. Her words pierced through my heart, and although I am no royal, I could relate to her: doing things that are against our wishes, the feel that our lives are out of our control, the emptiness of feeling lonely…

I wasn’t sure what it was that I learnt from the museum, or the point of setting up this museum with so much sorrows, but it did trigger my melancholic nerve and it was as if at that point in time, I was connected to this extraordinary women hundreds of years ago.

The Ferris wheel, Roller Coaster, Soaring swing, Antique Coca Cola Machines, all radiated in a synchronized color tone under the blasting lights. There was nobody though, and it reminded me of Zombieland. So we left.

It might be a shorter post, but trust me, the poem took me the entire ride from Wien to Prague and more (which was almost 5 hours FYI)

Vienna – home to lovely music and my extra weight gained – Part 1

Right before our bus ride from Budapest to Vienna, we used the rest of our hungarian money, 305 huff to buy 2 hash brown that cost 200 huff each. Yes, the math does not add up so how did that happen?

P1090636

P: One hash brown please.

Nice staff: 200 huff.

P: I have 105 huff left, can I buy anything with it?

Nice staff: No I’m sorry.

P: Well then please have it, we are leaving today and the money would be useless to us.

Nice staff: Sorry, we can’t take tips.

P: hmm… then can you give us one more hash brown? (wink wink)

Nice staff: okaaaay…. 😀 Wala~ Mission impossible checked.

Well, sometimes you just got to ask 😉 Who knew McDonald’s would give out half priced food?

P1090675

_____________________________________

We were also outsmarted by our smartphones who reminded us of the change of summer time so we did not miss the bus! And since we won’t be here when they change back …we lost an hour IN LIFE.

P1090667

Vienna greeted us coldly, with snow. And we responded with a nice nap before lunch. (The staff in our hotel folded my pajama :’) so considerate. I tested their kindness by putting 3 shirts on my bed, and all were nicely folded when I came home.

P1090777

We arrived city center and the umbrella we bought was completely ripped by the strong wind…

So first, we went to an elegantly designed library – The State Hall. Those books were not for checking out because the oldest ones dated back 1501! It was like entering a dream of intellectuals, as if simply breathing in the air in there would pump up my brain with knowledge…yea yea yea only if it is that easy to be smart -_-

P1090609   P1090619

Snapped back to reality by the exhibition on the sufferings of Austrian Jews. The letter below was written by an imprisoned husband to his wife, affectionately. One of the few exhibits in English because all materials sending out from the concentration camps had to be censored.P1090616

It brought tears in my eyes when the words I am perfectly all right flooded my sight. May god bring us together again very soon. It was so heartbreaking.

P1090635

I also learnt something new on my first day in Vienna by visiting the Esperanto museum. It is an artificial language created with the vision of uniting mankind and facilitating easier communication around the world. Really interesting concept.

P1090653

Would human beings really love and care about each other more simply because the same language is spoken? Experience told me cultures are just generalizations and they can only give me limited insight at best. Values of individuals are what really connects us.

P1090662

I have also learnt that many words we use today were created rather recently. Serendipity – the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident, It’s origin is surprisingly Sri Lanka – Serendip. Serendipity, the recurring motif of my life. Seek no more, and you shall find 🙂

P1090711

For dinner we tried some Schnitzel and they were oh so good.

P1090671 P1090670

Finally the weather was nice again and we visited the (cafe of) Belvedere palace.

Our plan was to shop but turned out all things were closed on Easter Monday except souvenir shops and cake shops. Sigh, So inevitably we were obliged to eat more cake…

P1090754

This, my friend, is Vanilla mousse with raspberry !

P1090762

Seriously, as we were looking for directions, all we saw were these super tricky fonts…who would be able to read them from across the street?

P1090742 P1090743

Angry little biker on the other side Oh come on, when will the light change ?

P1090733 P1090738

It might sound like non-stop eating, but believe me, the situation required us to do so.

Dinner, Pan fried shredded potato with sausage and salad, Viennese Soup (it reminded us of Chinese noodles soup)

P1090769

Final observation: Their metro was so much more modern and sharp compared to Budapest! I guess after all, it’s kind of like the tunnels of Switzerland and Italy 😉

P1090765 P1090677

Some things just never gets old.

P1090776

Buda-Pest Part 2

P1090319P1090413

Part 2 of Budapest started off with a sequence of interruptions:

1) IT RAINED. After snowing hard the day before, it rained hard on us. We managed to arrive the only store in the vicinity that sells umbrella by sharing a tiny one (that I lost eventually). The umbrella broke in a day, but that’s another matter.

P1090378

2) Finally we made it to the metro station, and right at that moment, I wiped my nose, and it was wet and red. In more than a year I have not had nose bleed and on THIS rainy day on SLIPPERY stairs, my nose decided to bleed on me. -_-

P1090397

3) Naive me thought that Citibank must be everywhere in Europe, and turned out they don’t do business in France. Budapest, on the other hand, does have Citi very prominently, but the thing is I  forgot my pin because I did not withdraw money in 3 months. Genius me. When I did recover my pin, the card failed. What the hell?

P1090398

4) Our only “local” friend was locked in her own house and had to postpone meeting us.

P1090538

WHAT a morning.  First stop, the Great Synagogue, largest in Europe. In the center, there buried 2000 dead bodies in 24 graves. They died from the holocaust. My heart pinched a little. Or may be it was a lot.

P1090285

Another beautiful and thankfully less tragic building – the Opera house.

P1090311P1090306P1090296

Then it got super cold and we went for “drumroll”….. TEA!

Hot wine, hot chocolate, pancakes with sweet cottage cheese and with Nutella. Absolutely divine. I have never had crepes (they call them pancakes here, just like in Iceland) with cottage cheese and they are the best !

P1090317  P1090322 P1090333

The cold gave me really bad headaches but we still managed past the never ending lonely path to the heroes square.

P1090338

Supposedly, Easter means all shops closed and nothing much to see. But no! To our most pleasant surprise, there were Easter celebrations everywhere and we came across two lively markets with mouthwatering food and useless but absolutely adorable things.

P1090361

I just have to post this photo, he looked at the camera for me 🙂

P1090362P1090375  P1090371

Crossing the famous chain bridge, we finally stepped foot on Buda. The view was close to breathtaking, but not quite because the weather was bad. What made me love Budapest so much during this trip was not the obvious spectacular view along the river (it was not even close to spectacular on that day);

P1090392P1090394

it was the vibe of the people, the folk songs and dances by bright young men and women, that really made it such a lovely city.

P1090456 P1090451P1090428

That above is a manual basket-go-round for babies! The cutest thing I have ever seen. The kids were giggling and gripping the ropes so tight. It was such a pleasant scene to see; pure simple pleasures. They were throughly happy. That was of course before the ruthless part of time kicks in, namely, growing up.

P1090470P1090471

Those long tubes were chimney cakes~! The name really fits because when it was ready, smoke comes out of the top, as if you are carrying a portable chimney! That rolling thing was super heavy, and they were the only handmade chimney cakes we have seen.

P1090463

This Easter Festival celebration on the Buda castle, everyone wore a huge smile on their faces and joy filled the atmosphere. The buzz, the warm hearted people, pale colors and sweet sweet air made the carnival so cozy and radiant.

P1090437

P1090494P1090551

The famous Mathias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion.

P1090513  P1090517

I decided then that I have to go back to Budapest again, when it is warm and clear.

P1090547

It is my second time to see these thoughtful “Maps” for the blind.

P1090559

I could not put myself into the shoes of the blind at all. All the gorgeous rivers, bewitching night views, charming seashores, they could not see it. What we take for granted, might be what others are dying to have. I felt so lucky at that precise moment. And as much as I believe that life is fair, I also like the idea of karma and even if good happenings don’t come after good deeds, at least there was some kind of good outcomes for someone. At least there was more good in the world for a brief instance because of me.

P1090407

Finally, our last dinner at Budapest and was again another hurdle. WE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH HUFF left… After a lot of math and brain power, we made the most out of our money and cheated a hash brown from McDonald’s the next morning. (More on that later on 😉 ) We almost did not have enough money for ketchup and we couldn’t even buy the pastry with ham…just cheese.

P1090576 P1090579

It started raining again and we had to run to the metro station, without knowing where was the closest one.

P1090349

Turned out it was just right around the corner and just when we were overjoyed by how smart we were to find the metro so swiftly and boarding the train that was almost leaving, the train STOPPED. The light went off and the engine went silent. WE BOARDED IT WHEN IT WAS ALREADY THE LAST STATION.

P1090580

All wagons were separated with no windows! The driver did not know we were still in it…(No wonder there were no one in the trains smartypants…) After some banging on the doors, we panicked. And although I do have some water left that will last me the night, the idea of being stuck there was horrifying. Thank god the light was on again and the engine started again. They used the same train for the other direction. THANK YOU god. P1090582

Budapest does have poorly designed metro, you cannot get to the other side of the platform unless you go back up the street. The escalators were different and super fast.

But either way, we were just glad we made home safe and in one piece.

P1090352

Buda-Pest (CHEAPEST city ever) Part 1

Finally, the cities that I have long been told are beautiful. Central Europe is an interestingly different place compared to the other “more developed” Western european countries. Let’s start with my favorite – Budapest.

P1090208

It was so shabby and dirt cheap, precisely why I loved it. We flew Wizz Air for the first time, and I could not believe we had to compete to get on board! My favorite budget airline is still Easyjet.

IMG_2785

It was my first time landing into an airport covered with snow. The timing, geographical location all doesn’t add up to snowing in my head. I was puzzled. Can anyone tell me why it’s so cold in Central Europe?!

P1090139

Boarding the metro, it was like traveling 50 years back in time… they probably have been using the same old train for a century; like was going to fall apart any time, how lovely.

P1090143

At city center, there was this huge colorful market building with overpriced touristy souvenirs. It was filled with an energetic vibe. But I preferred the outdoor although it was freezing.

P1090157P1090153

I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT MUCH SNOW EVER IN MY LIFE! Those kinds that I only see in movies: upon each step, crushy sound will be heard and footprints (like on sand) are left 1 inch deep. I would have lied down and do the snow angel thing if my jacket wasn’t new and I have someone to clean up my clothes afterwards.

P1090192

The snow was so thick that we simply couldn’t resist drawing a smiley face on this cute turquoise car.

P1090264

Then of course in ANY city, there are the churches.

P1090216

See how different it looked when the sun came out? Even the color changed. Erm , my friend said the people loved this saint stephen so much that his hand was cut out and placed inside this church…interesting logic eh?

P1090213  P1090224

Why i said Budapest was really cheap: we had dessert-tea for only 2 euros / person! It was sweet bread soak honeymilk with mysterious powder on top (It reminded me of heung low fui – sorry for the Cantonese) and Chocolate sauce pancakes with raisins and crushed nuts.

P1090218 P1090217

To burn off the calories, we went for a scroll along the famous river. The sun was setting and to me, it is the most exhilarating moment of a day.

P1090261

Yes it is calm and still, but it recharges my soul (If I have one?) with its glorious golden rays, upon the river, melting the snow, tinting the lonely (ugly) snowman. With every breath, I took in the wonderful scent of twilight as the day come to a close.

P1090270 P1090276

On a nice day like this, it also reminds me brutally that a lot a lot of minutes has passed and it will be tomorrow soon. On a bad day, however, it is a relief to know that darkness is approaching and I will be secluded again soon to just settle everything internally.

P1090257 P1090235

Dinner: my first try of rabbit meat, it tasted like chicken. And the arguably tasty vegetable dish. Who knows it’s that difficult to order normal veggie? Come on all we wanted was to stay healthy!

P1090281 P1090282

– And up to this point, my list of lost things include 2 left gloves, a hat and an adaptor …

P1090141

Somehow this lonely chair, and the melted snow (yes same as water) mirroring the bronze railings reminded me of the song Someone like you.

P1090277 P1090274

First of all I’d like to declare my love for these gorgeous, lovely and heavy keys. The Rome one even has my favorite number on it. They were so tricky to use but I just adore them 🙂

P1090135 IMG_2752

Now why such a dull title? Because that will only suit how the 2 days felt in Milan. Some personal issue undermined the supposedly very exciting shopping hearts of ours. But none of that matters anymore, issue was not fixed, but I have learnt to let go and accept. So back to Milan.

IMG_2762

They have these GENIUS technology in the train station so we could spare our arms for once (Apart from the lifting up and down buses, budget airlines’ staircase to the plane, UP our 3nd floor hotel  etc.)

P1090003

When I thought of Milan, I automatically think of the huge cathedral. But what I didn’t know is that the plaza in front of it are full of black guys handing out bracelets “for free” saying those are “gifts from africa”. It just sounded so odd and we never took them…wonder what would happen though if we did.

P1090009P1090043

All the branded luxury shops are here in this glorious mall: Gucci, Prada, LV etc. Not exactly what we were looking for, we were starving FOR FOOD.

P1090005

The mall has starry tiles in blue. AND THERE we found it. We had lunch there twice during our 2 days in Milan.

These friendly Swiss couple sat next to us and told us how they like to hear Chinese because they think it’s a beautiful language. What we noticed was how nice the old man was towards his wife. He helped her into her jacket, and these things I just never see in the Chinese society. I know that does not mean they don’t love each other as much, but perhaps they just show it in a different way.

P1090030

Turns out Milan will hold the World Expo in 2015, there were all these flags along the walking street. Until we felt tired and sat down in this coffee place.

P1090048P1090052  P1090054

Then we got hungry…no wait I think we were tired again, or were we cold? OH WELL who cares, we had gelato right after. This GROM place is one of the best one we have had so far!

P1090059

P1090062  P1090063

The next day we came back to the same restaurant because it really was that good, and we were too lazy to think.

P1090068 P1090067

The plan was to see other famous attractions, i.e. Sforza castle, and The Last Supper, but since the theme of Milan is fail, we not only missed the opening hours of the castle by just 5 minutes, we also didn’t know to see the oh – so – famous – last supper has to be pre-booked one week in advance…

P1090092 P1090088  P1090120

Caught a glimpse of someone taking photo of a couple who was so “in love”. 😉

P1090093

At the end we sat down outside a church to take a break. Suddenly the bells started to ring. Usually it is peaceful and calming, but the ones there? It sounded unsynchronized and so chaotic. Sigh, what else to say about that? Even the bells we heard were super fail.

World’s smallest “independent state” – Vatican and more Rome

P1080853P1080848

Although I am not the most religious, devoted Catholic out there (according to the social norms of going to church and stuff) the idea of meeting the pope (THE NEW Pope!) was such an excitement and luckily we got to spend Sunday in Rome without any previous planning!

P1080792P1080795

Right from the metro station, it was already extremely crowded. We were literally squished; even worse than Admiralty station. Everyone was heading to one direction only – Vatican. We just had to follow the parade of people and every step I took was faster than the previous. It was like going to Disneyland, the security check, huge crowd etc, but on a more spiritual level kind of excitement.

P1080798

As we got to the square, the mass has already started and we could only see from afar, the first Pope from Southern Hemisphere under the red shelter. The hymns sounded so serene and there must be over tens of thousands of people! Everything was kept in order though and I was not afraid of theft at all, because I didn’t think anyone would be desperate enough to steal in the Holy See.

P1080805

The sun was striking hot but everyone just stood there patiently and intently. Well except the horny couple right in front of us…not very nice is it?

P1080814

After 45 minutes of listening to the Italian mass and watching the Pope from afar  under the searing sun, we gave up and went for lunch.

P1080826

Strolling along the river under the sun and going through the flea market was just so relaxing. I can imagine myself doing this every day when I retire. (Ahem, seems like you haven’t even started a day of actual work and you’re already thinking of retirement…)

P1080830 P1080840   P1080862

Then we went back to the famous Basilica just in time to catch the super long line. The wait actually was not too long because the group behind us was very entertaining. They were a group of mainland Chinese discussing what nationality my friend and I were.

P1080884 P1080883

They couldn’t understand Cantonese and came to the conclusion that we were Malaysians. HAHAHA Perhaps Hong Kong people tend to be whiter? Honestly though, nationality really doesn’t matter. It takes more than what race a person is to determine their morality and virtues.

P1080878

The basilica is the largest in the world. You could tell by how tiny the people are compared to it. It obviously made all previous churches that I have seen extremely small.

P1080887 P1080892

At this point, I started reflecting on the whole idea of faith and religion. I used to have this theory that only kids and old people are most religious. As a kid, I knew nothing and tend to believe in everything nice and miraculous. As I grew older though, I started questioning how things were and there’s a part of me that seemed to believe more in fate in my own hands. I can imagine though that when we became old, religion is perhaps the only reassuring thing that calms our fear of the unknown.

P1080899

After that the inevitable resting spot is GELATO! Then we went for a bit of shopping and early dinner before going back to watch Angels and Demons again.

P1080903 P1080920

With that context in mind we were excited to visit the last few attractions in Rome. We first arrived at the random pillars, then the Pantheon. It was magnificent. After 2000 years, it is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome!

P1080927

There is a hole in the middle to allow sunshine into the temple (it was not particularly catholic, but rather a temple to all gods) First I did not understand why the central part is restricted, then I remember it rained earlier and thus right below the hole was wet and slippery 😉

P1080947

P1080941

The bodies of 2 Italian Kings were buried here too. After that it started raining rather heavily and we had to skip along souvenir shops and gelato shops (such a good excuse) before arriving Piazza Novena. The flea market there was not as fascinating as the dogs passing by. It seems like Italians like bigger, chubbier dogs compared to the petite and fragile dogs in Southern France.

P1080985P1080968P1080958

That’s it for Rome and next stop? The fashion city, Milan!

P1080955

And lastly, what made Vatican even more like Disneyland were these colorful Swiss guards 😀

The land of RUINS – Rome, Italy

P1080700

The first stop of my longest trip ever. Rome… movies like Angels and Demons, Eat Pray Love etc. built a high expectation inside my head and the reality is, everywhere I looked in Rome was RUINS. Not that I didn’t like it, but may be if it was tied together with a wretched love story of a Prince and a beautiful girl, it would have been more interesting. (Even the signs call those “ruins”)

P1080722

So what I loved about Italy? Sorry for being shallow again, but it has to be the gelato. All in all my lovely companion and I had almost 30 scoops of gelato throughout Rome and Milan. Some were better than others, but most of them were way above average and reasonably priced. That alone is a big enough motive to go to Italy! Then again they also have the pizza, risotto, pasta, panini…you name it and they probably taste better than you could imagine 🙂

IMG_2744

P1080678

The inevitable first stop is obviously the old town. Colosseum, some kind of Square, some crippled walls, broken rocks (Sorry too lazy to look up what they are called, but you really don’t need to know, just follow the crowd and you won’t miss these “touristy” places)

P1080687 P1080731

P1080694

All those ruins looked the same and we kept going in circles. My map reading skills must have improved a lot but still not meticulous enough. P1080710P1080703

How I wish I was born a man, not being sexist, but it’s biological that they are better in navigation.

P1080729  P1080737P1080738

The weather was thankfully nice, although for a southern France-r no weather can really impress me anymore, so spoiled by the always bright sunshine white clouds blue sky weather. So much talking and laughing along the way, combined with gelato stops in between.

P1080751

Before we know it, we stumbled upon THE fountain. It was BEYOND crowded. My height, of course, was a huge disadvantage at these scene, good that my buddy is tall and I could just cling on to her 🙂

P1080773

I did throw coins in so hopefully it will bring me back to Rome 🙂

P1080758 P1080768

The sun set so quickly while we ran into a WWF event. Do you know why their logo is a panda?

P1080781

Because when they started they were too poor and black and white printing is cheapest! Learn something new everyday eh! (Credits to my roommate 🙂

The mornings were so warm but at night, it started to get cold again. We had to stop by an ancient but elegantly designed mall to defrost before we could continue walking to dinner. We were really exhausted from the 8 hours of walking and decided to take the metro back instead, 1.5 euro each. It was too cold to walk back anyway. And that’s when the REAL adventure begins.

P1080776

We finally sat down at a restaurant. We first sat outside reading the menu but suddenly everyone started jumping onto their chairs and we did the same, not knowing what was going on because they all spoke Italian. TURNS OUT THERE WAS A MOUSE RUNNING ACROSS from the other side. No big deal, we then moved inside to dine. I mean all we wanted was some hot food to replenish our energy… Ok we ordered our food and it tasted good, of course it has to be, it’s ITALY.

P1080775

Funny how we only carried just enough cash and brought our credit card along. When we paid for our meal, we realized service charge wasn’t included and the waiter was expecting tip. We gave 3 euros to them and happily left the restaurant with a full stomach. THEN it occurred to us why we have 3 euros left is because we saved that for taking the metro back home! So instead of our perfect plan, we had to walk 45 mins home. We couldn’t even find our map anymore. Turns out we left it outside when the mouse intruded…it was wet because water was spilled when we were frightened.

P1080779

What else could we do but laugh at our own stupidity? We had to half run half walk back because it really was cold, our clothes wasn’t meant for the night. All in all it was a great day though. Get a good companion and you are 50% guaranteed to have a good trip 🙂

P1080787 P1080788

The next morning we had breakfast served inside our room. It wasn’t super fancy, but we were just staying in a hostel! I wasn’t expecting that at all. The next day we met the new Pope in Vatican! More on that in the next post 🙂

P1080791

Oh and I almost forgot about these lovely Brocoli looking trees 🙂

P1080695

The Gloomy and Briefly Sunny Copenhagen

P1080609

Funny how I finally picked up writing again after 15 days of non-stop traveling to 6 cities. Wasn’t completely crazy, no, but challenging enough for someone as “sporty” as myself. Time to walk down memory lane and record bits and pieces before I forget. Hang on though, I still haven’t wrote about Copenhagen, which was a month back! Seriously where has the time gone? (That reminds me of Dali! can’t wait to get to write about him later on when I get to Venice 😉

Copenhagen was special because I saw snow for the first time. It made me clapping and jumping deep down in my heart. But then Budapest and Vienna welcomed me with too much snow…Can I just have the snow without the cold please? (In your dream -_-)

319539_10151502649356438_97694837_n P1070936

Late Feb was pretty gloomy up north. Good that the salivating food made up for it. Here are some highlights of my trip 🙂 First and foremost, the green frozen poor baby. Nah kidding. Of course there were things to see in Copenhagen.

P1070833P1070911

Point to note: really touristy landmarks are usually a let down, or was it because my expectation was too high?

1) Touristy places (I know… someone painted the C out lol)

P1070898

It was freezing (-2, that’s beyond tolerable for someone who was spoiled by the Southern France weather) so we simply couldn’t walk, the Canal tour was at least warm. All there is to say is a landmark without sun is like food without salt.

P1070864

It was snowing/raining (Can’t really tell, no expert at this) and I knew it’s not really the colorful houses’s faults, they did their best to look pretty, the sun simply wasn’t feeling cooperative.

P1070915P1070896

(Under comparison, Venice + Sun was wondrous if not for the gazillion tourists) At least here it was not crowded.- more on that later on 😉

The lake was frozen so the boat had some things to do – cracking the ice while we listened.

P1070868

This is it, THE mermaid. I couldn’t help but think why are all statues so miniature? This obviously is a salute to the most famous Danish, Anderson. We paid a visit to a museum about his life, and finally after all these years listening to Ugly Ducklings, I understood why he wrote such story.

P1070888

This was where he stayed in for sometime! The story teller we all have heard of.

P1070914 P1070913

Apparently, Anderson was very unconfident as a child because he was, well ugly. (The museum put it in a nicer way but essentially that was it.) I wouldn’t comment on that because I think the concept of beauty is relative and very subjective. But I’m sure in one way or another, we feel unconfident, unworthy even, at times. I have definitely had one of those moments especially recently. Not really in the super optimistic mode right now but I guess all there is to comfort myself is that everyone has to be good at something, however trivial.

In the Ripley’s museum, some “talented” people could make music out of a flute with their nostrils. Well so be it. I am sure one day in my life I will figure out something that I am qualified to do. (Hopefully it doesn’t involve my nostrils.)

P1070841

We also saw like a change of guard ceremony thing with these blue pants black furry hat guys. Wasn’t particularly fascinating but then again, there was nothing else to do otherwise 😛 Oh ok, I really liked the way it sounded when they march, the crisp sound of heels clashing the rocky ground in a synchronized rhythm.

P1080591 P1080579

2) Food – Was not particularly cheap, but I think the quality made up for it. Breakfast – heart shaped pastries. P1070835

FREE ICE CREAM! We each got 2 scoops and I dropped mine… typical me. Scraping out the part touching the floor, I finished my ice cream 😛 without getting sick (safe to say that after a month I supposed)

P1080629

Traditional cake shop with a friendly old man receptionist (or owner?) Such a cute little shop with pricey but good cakes.

P1080633

P1080641 P1080640 P1080639

The hotdog stands, It seems like hotdogs are famous everywhere…

P1080614

Dinner all you can eat. Not very “local” but buffets are just my type. THEY HAVE PARMA HAM AND MELON. Capitals for the melon actually because they are so rare and overpriced in France. (or Europe in general)

P1080568 P1080567 P1080564

It may seem like we were always eating, but trust me, every calorie was 100% justified, you know the coldness, gloomy wet weather, non-stop walking etc.

P1070924 P1070923 P1070921

These sandwiches was really good. But still for the amount we paid, I expected it to be more filling.

P1070854 P1070855 P1070848P1070853

3) Shabby Train station and Protest – Copenhagen is such a civilized place (especially compared to Central Europe) but why did they allow their train stations to be “decorated” as such? I have no clue.

P1080561

On the way out for dinner, we witnessed this huge student protest where people drink beer and marched. My 3rd time seeing a protest/demonstration in Europe and they never gets old unlike the guard changing ceremony 😉

P1080559 P1080557

On the second/last day, THE SUN came out. The whole place lit up and the city was suddenly all warm and welcoming.

P1080542P1080603

Perhaps to end this it is worth mentioning their airport has some of the best wifi compared to the Europe airports I have been to 😛

P1070933
