Rotterdam, where every police I met was a woman~

P1120300

First off, why on earth have I met 4 police woman in the politie station? Well, just a few weeks before going back to Hong Kong, I have accidentally (?) dropped my phone 😦 in somewhere that I wasn’t 100% sure. But well that matter had been settled, what was REALLY strange was every police I encountered was a middle aged woman :O. Completely opposite to the stereotypical masculine police figure. Anyway they have been so nice to me and based on my “rather” limited encounter with police, I think they are all really kind people who tend to swear a lot.

P1120257P1120235

Now back to Rotterdam, it seemed like a decent city, but there really was just one touristic place: Kinderdijk. There are 19 windmills that have been there forever; long enough to be listed a UNESCO. Most importantly, it was completely free!

P1120253P1120324

We rented a bike (haha, another funny story) for a few euros and got to enjoy the postcard views along the rivers of those tall old windmills.

P1120332

That above is obviously too big to be my bike. I am not good at cycling at all given that this is merely my third time riding one, but turned out I was not the worst! I managed the entire journey back and worth without falling.

P1120306P1120241

Indeed there were some occasional sudden breaks, brushing against pedestrians, screaming and shouting. But but but, I still managed. Once when I stopped suddenly, a man walked by and said to me “I am Dutch, do you need me to teach you some lessons?” hahaha embarrassing.

P1120247P1120334

Of course biking is no big deal, but for me it is. I figured out that it wasn’t the balancing that really frightens me. It was the being out of control. Instead of trusting my legs, I have to rely on 2 wheels that don’t even attach directly on me!

P1120245P1120321

But I was still able to enjoy the view flying by me on both sides (yes, flying because I know the faster I go, the more steady it would be) of the bike despite my constant murmur to myself that I will not fall.

P1120259P1120315

What made it even harder was the pedestrians who always move out of my way too slow, and the rather “narrow” road surrounded by water, another fear of mine. At the end I bruised my little right finger perhaps from brushing against the pedestrians too often 😛

P1120296

I stopped occasionally when there were more things to see. I ran into 2 duckling families running some errands together. It was definitely one of the CUTEST scenes I have EVER seen in my exchange so far!

P1120293

A big and a small family 🙂 With mommy and daddy protecting them from back and front!

P1120292

Couples with the same pace in life.

P1120327P1120344

Then of course we should never forget about the tea part!

P1120349

P1120357

And yet another day of TEAAaaaa. Now I am starting to have a rough idea where my extra weight might have came from 😉

P1120458

There was then these strangely tilted dices they made into a HOUSE. It was cheap to go in, but it made us all very dizzy. I guess we human are too used to the normal straight line boxes.

P1120446

AND of course the pancake boat. It wasn’t that special really, what was SUPER surprising…was the playroom they have under the boat!

P1120386

P1120384 P1120374

One last special thing, THE largest “vending machine” I HAVE EVER SEEN in my life 🙂

P1120364

I-Amsterdam (A phrase I never quite understood)

P1110989

Apr 30th.  Trip to Amsterdam on “drumrollll” QUEEN’s DAY! And it wasn’t even a deliberate decision. That’s why things are sometimes best when they are unintentional 🙂 Those days at Netherlands had some of the best weather I have ever seen in Europe. Everyday infinite blue sky and huge white clouds no matter where you look. 🙂

P1110912

Queen’s day is the biggest thing for the Dutch every year and we had the luck to witness the parties, the wastes on the floor, the orange, and the horrifying smell of piss -_- (because they love Beer, Heineken, and after beer -> they go to the “public toilets” which are practically just mailbox size pissing stands with no doors -_-)

P1110934

P1110981

We had these tiny pancakes which were just super cute. Also based on inductive logic we thought this stall must have the best ones 😉

P1110987

The weather was so great along with the Queen’s day vibe. A couple even moved their sofa OUT on their foyer for a sunbath!

P1110996

Spring finally came along and flowers were blooming everywhere. Although it was really dirty during Queen’s day, the next morning the roads were swept clean again like nothing has happened!

P1110955

This is Anne Frank’s house. I never thought I would be able to get behind the ACTUAL bookshelf secret chamber. This exchange to Europe has fulfilled way beyond my dreams, and I’m not even 20 yet! 🙂

P1120018

P1110971 P1110976

We also went to this slick library in Amsterdam which really made the Central Library in Hong Kong a midget. The Netherlands is so homo friendly that there are dedicated bookshelves of books related to homosexual topics 🙂 and they are in pink.

P1120064P1120059

There were too many fluffy sofas and comfy chairs everywhere.

P1120056

P1120028

And this, the adorable child section. Everyone shrunk back to a kid in this zone.

P1120021  428429_10152781014175247_1985123901_n  P1120029

Imagine studying in this library, I would never want to leave.

P1120043

Who can miss the beautiful Tulips when visiting Holland! Keukenhof was the flower “Theme park.”

P1120093

Name any color and you probably can see it there.

P1120109  P1120104 P1120140

I never knew Miffy was from the Netherlands. Within Keukenhof, there was a cutie miffy playground and there was this little girl stuck, yelling “MOM I can’t get out of here” in English, probably a tourist. I was going to help her but I was afraid she might scream” Mom someone’s kidnapping me”.

P1120137 P1120162

After the flowers, the red light district come into mind! And oh my, of course the red light district is huge. Out of respect, and also fear of being spilled pee, I dare not take any photos of the workers. It was kind of eye-opening for me because I actually saw people asking for prices and going in. 50 euros for 15 mins. Imagine that.

P1120082

P1120088P1120079

Wonderful mornings mean magical evenings. This was a super decadent trip. But the food in Netherlands was not particularly remarkable. The coffee was better in Italy, apple strudel better in Vienna, and well the waffles was just as good as Belgian ones.

P1120070

But I would still think it is the best Europe country for me to live in if I ever have to pick one. It’s food is decent, living standard normal (better than Swiss and UK) but people can speak English so well! (better than Spain,France,Italy) and the weather seemed great. (If it was just trying to fool me, it succeeded)

P1120168

WE did climb up the statue! Risking our lives, no exaggeration. But the only photo with the whole word was without us :/

P1120174

That on the left is an anti-pee device. Apparently it will splash right back at you when you pee at that corner xD (obviously I didn’t/couldn’t try) They said back in the days it was hooked to electricity :O.

P1120188P1120205

Another outstanding observation: the houses in Amsterdam looked awfully tilted and when I thought I was either hallucinating (not that I did any weed 😉 or the architects were drunk; it’s neither of those reasons! You see pulleys at the top of the buildings and buildings are usually tilted outwards so when things gets moved up back in the days (no elevators, and stairs too narrow), it won’t bang into the window!

P1120192

As an ending to Amsterdam, we visited this hmm, I’m not sure what these are called. Let’s say it’s a dormitory for single woman over 30. Seems like a legit place to stay really, safe and sound.

P1110920

Zurich (The loud burning of Böögg festival) and mini Liechtenstein

Last one on Switzerland and the random mini country that I have always wanted to visit. This is Zurich at night! It became increasingly difficult to take photos of the cities I went to at night because the sun doesn’t set until 9-10pm!P1110270 P1110275

Mirror hallucinations.

P1110274

Our failed attempt on timer-set photo taking, but that’s kind of interesting! Like we were vanishing into the river. The blur you see on the bottom right was a really nice Swiss guy who told us about a Spring Festival the next day! So that’s why we decided to stay one more night there! Totally ad hoc decision.

P1110260

Guess what that’s for? It’s a duck! (hint: not just decorative)

P1110266

The spring festival starts at the afternoon every year so we went to Liechtenstein in the morning! Turned out there actually wasn’t much, (except Chinese tourists) like I was told, but it was still fascinating to be in a country with less than 35k residents! We went to a free museum about stamps/postal stuff, like the one in Monaco, seemed like these small countries like to have such kind of displays.

P1110293

They had these outdoor “library shelves” completely unlocked! It is astonishing to see how disciplined the citizens are. Imagine that in Hong Kong, all books would probably be gone and never returned in 3 days.

P1110303

That small castle up on the hill lives the royal family! I guess in such a small place, everyone must have already known everyone.

P1110311

We only went to the “capital” Vaduz and it was rather sparse when we moved away from the tourists streets. We saw some gorgeous icy mountain tops beside the river 🙂

P1110322 P1110341

Time to head back to Zurich! (I fell asleep during the ride again, sun fu sai daddy :P)

P1110394

This festival is mainly about people celebrating their hard work in Winter. Groups of different location (? my guess) and occupation march along and at the end they burn a poor snowman to symbolize the end of winter!

P1110408

There he was, all tied up on top, waiting for his dying day :/ They say the faster it explode, the better the summer would be.

P1110423

I figured everyone in Zurich probably went out because I have never seen that many people since Vatican.

P1110429

She reminded me of my dad and I when we were young. She looked so bossy though.

P1110465

At exactly 6pm they lit up the hays and EVERYONE cheered.

P1110473

After almost 40 minutes, the body exploded and the fireworks inside it started making loud noises and so there we said our goodbyes to Winter!

P1110488

THAT was a candy meant to be picked up by me, but the guy in red shirt was faster 😦 I could see it but I couldn’t REACH for it.

P1110466

Great great weather and cotton candy that I haven’t had in ages 🙂

P1110209 P1110212

Aaaah perfect world. Whoever invented these completely not filling but fun food must be Peter Pan – someone who never grew up.

P1110226

Roadtrip with Dad at a glance (Evian les Bains, Thonon les Bains, Interlaken and Montreux)

P1100956

Here is the town where the so-called best water, Evian, came from! We stayed in a cozy and small hotel. This was a really good lunch for 18 euros only before we checked in.

P1100779P1100780

P1100776

The beautiful weather followed us from Geneva and as I entered the room, I was overwhelmed by just how sweet everything was!

P1100810

There were small sofas with stuffed bears at the corridor. They also used my favorite keys to lock the wardrobe. P1100802 P1100786

Our room opened out to a gorgeous balcony overlooking Lake Geneva and Lausanne, on the other side of the “lake” that actually looked more like an ocean 😛 And guess what came complimentary with the room? Evian brand water. OF COURSE.

P1100781

The weather stayed picturesque long enough for us to roam around this rather empty town with nothing much to see. Then it showered heavily and we went into a Casino. Strangely, in all those little towns we went to, there would always be a Casino nearby.

P1100817

There was almost nobody there which is good, I was quite tired of tourists pushing around by then (although I am a tourist too :P) Along the way we saw fountains that basically offers drinkable water (I know because I drank it and I am still perfectly healthy by now). That water is probably “Evian” water. Research has shown that Evian kept the location to where they bottle their water undisclosed to prevent people from polluting their “products”.

P1100821

Since there was nothing much to do, we decided to drive to a Chinese restaurant we found on the GPS when the sky started raining hard. And to our surprise, we found ourselves at a different town – Thonon.

P1100847

There’s me and my beloved dad 🙂 And after my first decent 3 courses 1 soup and rice Chinese meal in 4 months, the rain stopped and lovely puddles formed.

P1100869

Although the sky was hardly dark, it was “too late” for shops to be opened. And when one’s bored, one does strange and retarded things. Well, that “one” was just me.

P1100872

P1100842P1100865

Next morning we headed for Interlaken and stopped by Montreux. Seriously a picture says a thousand words. I don’t know what else I can talk about these places because  there really was nothing much to do. Nonetheless, simply breathing the fresh air and indulging our eyes with the gorgeous snowy mountains was worth it already.

P1100909 P1100913  P1100928

Again, loving old couples under the postcard view. They have this look that says “wow, we’re both old, but it doesn’t matter because we still have each other”.

P1100955

Interlaken was again back in the Swiss border. People were paragliding in the warm afternoon and there was a gigantic carpet of grass right between the snow-topped mountains. Again, nothing much for me to say, see it for yourself.

P1100999 P1110008

After crossing the lawn, we saw this really interesting “competition” between 2 churches.

P1110013

The one above is Protestant and the one below Catholic. Well, they were perhaps fighting for believers because at 5pm both churches started ringing their bells really loudly and it was so chaotic! Really my first time to see this and I actually found it funny.

P1110014

Cheese fondue again along with local beer that tasted mighty fine.

P1110023 P1110024

Finally our last stop, the OpenAir Museum that showcased the lives of Swiss back in the days. I LOVE open air museums, you get to play around with things and touch all kinds of displays that are forbidden to touch in a typical museum!

P1110048

This cute little kid ignored her parents when they were walking away from her. Brave little girl.

P1110058

Then me and dad tried to halved that piece of wood like people do in the old days. It was NOT easy at all.

P1110062

Then the local ladies were so eager to teach me how to knit…I kept failing but they simply wouldn’t give up showing me so eventually I sort of was able to do a few stitches hahaha.

P1110066

That was our lunch, mushroom risotto and sausages, it didn’t look appealing, but trust me, it tasted really good 🙂

P1110136

We saw chickens and cows and goats and it was all just so much fun, going up and down their houses, climbing the stairs and playing with their kitchen and playrooms aaaah definitely worth bringing your kids there. It was my favorite place.

P1110087

We could spend all day there just but no we stopped after visiting 1/3 of it because we had a schedule to catch! Zurich was our last stop.

P1110104

This has got to be the best trip ever. No I’m not saying this just because dad pays for everything. Or that we get to have Japanese food, Hot pot etc… No. It was just so nice to have someone absolutely reliable, to have someone to talk to non-stop, who gives advices and encouragements occasionally. Just like all dads would to their child.

P1110185

A big part of why I am who I am today is because of my Dad. Always supportive and caring even when I make mistakes. One thing I hate the most is letting him down. Despite of all the lessons I have learnt, overcoming my fear of the dark, of strangers, of carrying heavy stuff etc. I will always be the small girl I was.

P1110140

Lessons my dad taught me (ones that I still remember)

1) Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. As long as the holes are not detrimental, I will let you fall into it and you will crawl out by yourself.

P1110178

2) You don’t have to be the smartest person out there. The world needs a lot of smart people and you will do just fine.

P1110088

3) Be nice to people, it’s a privilege that you can offer more.

P1100919

Me: When can you accept that I get married?

Dad: Well you do know that after 21 years old, you don’t need my signature anymore to be legally married, right?

Geneva – Capital of Switzerland /Expensiveland

P1100533

Brilliant day welcomed me into Geneva instead of the rainy forecast that I was expecting! It was not a particularly exciting city, but all tourists get to travel on public transport for FREE, which really soften my heart for it. The most interesting thing I did was a tour inside UNOG! I got to roam around a bit into the canteen and corridors (during the tour, I found out it was not exactly “allowed”) The Patek Phillppe museum was alright, loved the cuckoo bird clocks but there were just TOO many too many watches…

P1100599P1100709

Inside UNOG, Everyone was in their impeccable suits looking extremely professional and I felt so out of place in my green and purple and boots. As the tour begin, we were into an actual meeting! I wanted to know if the country reps were ACTUALLY listening and researching on their laptops/phones.

P1100554P1100553

Anyone know how to read this clock? All UN clocks in Geneva sponsored by the very own Patek Philippe.

P1100548

The most fascinating room had to be the Human Rights Room. The ceiling was so gorgeous with a beautiful symbolic meaning. It represents the seabed, resources shared by all mankind, but from different angle, you see different colors.

P1100556

That’s because as countries come into a meeting, they brought in different opinions and mindset. The smartest trick about it is that when you stand in the middle, the colors unify. This represents that after the meetings, a consensus would be reached, or at least people get to understand each others’ viewpoints better.

P1100557

Now I just have to go to the New York UN Office 🙂 The one in Geneva is more special in a way because it was erected during the era of League of Nations. The infrastructure emphasized on the contribution from their members. The Spanish room below was used back then and the grand paintings also symbolized  great things that mankind is capable of: technical, social and medical advancement. It was a very intellectually enlightening tour and although the actual function of UN is debatable (especial the Veto Power part…)  I guess the world could have been much worse without it.

P1100586  P1100566

The part that UN made the most progress would be on human rights. This huge broken chair sculpture focused on the harm that land mines could do to poor innocent people. Moments like these remind me of just how lucky I am despite of other secondary (rather minor) “accidents” I have had.

P1100712P1100679

As I roamed around the old town and the city, I found real ladybirds for the first time! They don’t look too much like the way cartoons depict them though.

P1100614

I stumbled upon a rather retarded but cute attraction ” the world’s longest bench”…. LOL

P1100640 P1100647

My third city touring alone and apart from the insanely expensive sandwiches, I liked it the most. The weather must have played the biggest part, but also the atmosphere was so chill and it was nice to know people around were rich (seemed like the threat of theft has decreased although that doesn’t necessarily make sense :P)

P1100654 P1100657

Yes, I have seen baby cribs with twins but not with 1, 2, 3, 4 kids?! No no wait, it was 5 little children 🙂

P1100670

Sweeeeetzerland 🙂

P1100653

Most beautiful _____ (no idea what these are called haha) I have seen! I love these hanging ____. P1100652

The lake though was not too impressive. Perhaps I have seen too much water in Venice.

P1100705 P1100694

Switzerland, MORE ice cream. Movenpick was actually CHEAP. They also had Vanilla Coke!!! I have missed them so much, why why why did they stop selling them in HK so many years ago?

P1100706 IMG_2910

Of course, one could NEVER miss the deliciously rich cheese fondue ❤ ❤ Oh and Dad (who happened to drop by 😉 had steak. We shared the beef stew (oh – so – yummy) and I finished the cheese by myself. It was just hard to imagine ALL those cheesy creamy stuff INSIDE of me.

P1100724P1100719P1100723

At night we hopped on a random mini boat that stopped by (it was free too!) without knowing where the destination was.

P1100738P1100736

That’s one thing so great about traveling, you never know what to expect next.

P1100733

Then we kickstarted my very first road trip in this sturdy ocean blue subaru forester. I just love SUVs. They looks cooler, allows me to see further and are so much comfier. I am so getting one of those when I grow up.

P1100770 P1100752

We flew by Switzerland for the next stop – Evian, France. Yes where the water is bottled. Dad asked me why I wanted to go there because I planned the entire itinerary, and I replied “hmm, I don’t know, because I want to?” And he just nodded.

P1100753

You know how people say they have the best daddy in the world? Well, my dad probably isn’t the bestest, but I love him for everything and I am never trading him for anyone else, not even George Clooney.P1100763

And so here we went and I had the best week with my beloved Daddy.

P1100768

Anyone see something special in this photo? ‘_’

P1100751

________________________________________________________________________

Finally starting to write again after my last long trip! Geneva was more than a month ago! Where have the time gone? And wow, how I have missed my beloved laptop. Nothing better than the feel of typing on it and listening to the tab tab click sound. It’s soothing almost.

Now Just imagine I wrote all my posts in such an atmosphere. hahaa not.

IMG_2900

Gorgeous Venice with overflowing tourists (it almost rhymes)

P1100234

Finally finally. The end of my 15 days trip, Venezia was my last stop. Waking up at 4am, took a cab to Prague airport for a flight departing at 6am. Sounded like fun especially for the fact that I looked like a zombie afterwards.  But I got the perks of being an early bird, and for the first hour I was in Venice, there were actually space around me and not just layers of people after people.

P1100437

It was also my lucky day for so many strangers extended their helping hand for a day that I was really distressed. Stranger 1 lifted my luggage up the upper head compartment, a charming married woman.

P1100222

I was starving by the time I got there, and I had my last cup of cappuccino in Italy and a ham baguette. Everything in Venice was overpriced. And with the big crowd, it wasn’t hard for me to run into familiar faces at all. It’s a small world after all!

P1100246P1100294

Basically, all of Venice looked like that, bridges, big and small, canals, big and small. Sharp buildings (just like in James Bond movies.) It was perhaps the most difficult city I have been to in terms of navigation. I crossed every bridge I saw, took every turn that came to me, and walked down every alley that my feet stumbled upon. In less than 4 turns, I was completely lost. Disorientated, surrounded by water.

P1100301P1100312

Can you believe actually having a boat, to your door and that is the only way of getting home? How could that be? It was like a parallel universe, no cars, just boats. Big and small.

P1100229P1100242

Good thing about this was I got to see the residential part of Venice, (yes, there are actually people living there full time, not just selling hats and masks on the street.) away from tourists and most of the time was just me and my minute shadow, under the almost mid-day sun.

P1100470

Eventually, I got to some sort of end and with one more step, I will be walking into the sea. My phobia for water suddenly sinked in and it took me 3 seconds to figure out that if I fell, no one would notice and I will just sink to the bottom of the ocean. Or I will float to the end of the world, joining Jack Sparrow, Captain, Jack Sparrow.

P1100384P1100463

That was when I wanted to go back into the crowd and do tourist-y things, getting to the Marco Polo Plaza. The signs were super confusing. Stranger number 2 appeared and asked if I am lost. He did not seem kind enough and I dismissed his “concerns” with a smile and quickened my pace.

P1100483P1100508

I was just passing by alleys after alleys, chapels after chapels, and canals after canals. Everywhere looked exactly the same. Stranger number 3 tapped on my shoulder not long after and spoke to me in Italian holding out 15 euros. Oh my, I must have dropped it somewhere, I thanked the nice old man and carried on walking. That was the only cash I have on me left. It was a preventive measure against more shopping. (Thank god I would still be able to get home as I have already bought return bus ticket ;)) Learning from my mistake in Rome.

P1100481P1100477

And as my shadow disappeared, I was joined by endless tourists instead. The square was indeed rather captivating. It was unlike the Spain or Belgian squares, where all buildings kind of looked the same, here there were different kinds of architecture: corridors, clock tower, church, arches everywhere.

P1100393

P1100387

P1100400

I felt suffocated, perhaps it was the mid-day heat, or the people. When I was away by myself an hour ago, I felt insecure, and then when I was enveloped by people, I felt unease. How contradicting? So where else should I be really?

P1100336

P1100419

Ah, perhaps I should be like those seagulls, resting on ancient statues’ heads, as if that’s their territory. Removed from the crowd, but still watching closely. Hey, just one more spot left for me on the far left!

P1100421

Anyone see what I saw? Those glaring eyes under bold eyebrows, watching the postman. The huge almost wolf-size “pet” resting by, being protective of his master.

P1100492P1100432

Afterwards, I went into the glorious church, but did not take any photos. I was tired from walking  4 hours straight and I sat inside for  30 minutes, just absorbing the atmosphere and catching my breath. Perhaps there really is something about churches that calm people. Is it the flickering candle lights? The elevated dome shaped ceiling, perfectly smooth arches, solemn religious paintings on the wall, subtle sunshine through the miraculous  windows or the faint scent of …incense I think?

P1100480

After that I wandered off to a park with a sparse number of people, and wrote my postcards. One to myself was lost and I completely forgot what it was that I wanted to tell myself. It was quite sad not knowing where my personal message from past self to present self is now 😦

P1100497

Venice was such an artistic place, and I am not even referring to their famous glasses. I stumbled upon a very special photographic exhibition in a worn out house. In the 2 floors building, Latvian culture was displayed on photographs all over the walls. The photos were so vivid yet impeccably staged in a way that I was convinced these scenes, 100 rooms, actually reflected Latvian homes.

P1100521

After more walking (or perhaps getting lost is a better word), I saw the familiarly ridiculous moustache of Dali. There was an exhibition on him, The Dali Universe, and since I so regrettably missed out his museum in Barcelona, I went in although it was rather pricey (even for students!). And man, I certainly made the right decision.

P1100515

That famous melting clock, I finally understood what it symbolises: the ticking of time can be so precise, yet the speed of time really only depends on us. That’s why it’s in a liquid form. Time is not absolute. His sculptures were full of recurring images of snails and eggs and ants. These all demonstrates nature’s greatest paradoxes, soft and hard, strong and weak all in the same object. It was intoxicating to be introduced into his great mind. He was a cocky bastard and I loved him for that, like how many others did.

P1100517

That statue focused on what he was always interested in, femininity. Women’s true beauty is their mysteries. The drawers, where she store them are left ajar. He thinks these are not to be feared by men, but they should understand. hmmm.

I don’t do drugs, I am drugs. Take me, I am hallucinogenic.

There is only one difference between a madman and me. The madman thinks he is sane. I know I am mad.

I was chuckling to myself reading his oh so proud quotes of himself. No wonder people loved him so much, you have to love yourself before people grow to like you.

P1100224

I have lots to write about Venice because I went alone. People say your travel-mates are the filter between you and the local culture and surroundings. I was able to see more and go by my own pace.

P1100469

I stopped a lot just to watch people, no matter they were just walking their dogs while getting busy on their phones, or sitting/lying under the sun savoring the beautiful day.

P1100307

It was a lot of fun to be by yourself to some extent, but I could never do this all the time. It is too tiring to be alert at all times and I hate that I had no one to talk to. Stranger number 4 offered to help me take a photo when I was setting up self-timer. If I had a mate, it would be much easier 🙂

P1100460

At the end it finally occurred to me I should start finding my way back to the shabby hostel. Since I had absolutely no idea my whereabouts, I resort to a rather non-scientific method. When I walked into the heart of Venice in the morning, I was walking towards the sun… so now I just have to walk towards the sun again because it is setting… and it should be right? Luckily, I was right and after 45 minutes, I was on the bus ride heading back.

 P1100428

Prague – erm…yea just Prague.

P1090886

Why is it just Prague? Yes I was told it is gorgeous, and I believe it definitely is,,, if the weather cooperates. But when we were there it was not like that AT ALL.  The most beautiful and intriguing thing we saw was a bank… The weather was again against us and even the famous Charles Bridge failed to put us in awe.

P1090946 P1090956 P1090954

We really just went in and took photos. First time in my life to do that in a bank. The receptionist must be so used to this.

It is almost like a ritual to compare public transport here at Central Europe! Here we took the tram, and they were somewhat better than Budapest but not even near Vienna’s contemporary designs.

P1090926P1090921

P1090923

Prague food was good too, but then not as cheap as Budapest 😦 P1090880

Then of course, there’s the old town!

P1090994P1090976

Easter Carnival again! Everything was so bright colored and little kids were staging cute plays. The kids were circling the “tree” (acted by a tall boy) and eventually all were stuck to it … I was puzzled by what was going on and my companion was spot on “The first kid played around the tree, and was glued to it, and he called for help, and all other kids tried to help out but ended up glued to the tree too.” – Wow. 😉

P1090990  P1090998

Easter Tree. Eggs on Trees. It was almost as absurd as Dali’s sculptures.

P1100002P1090972

As we roamed around we passed by this little shop with overflowing goods that I did not dare step foot in; as if the moment I pushed the door all stuff would collapse on me.

P1100004 IMG_2875

Highlight of Prague! Kafka’s statue. This was hilarious, and also proof of “nothing is possible unless you at least give it a shot.” I have not been piggybacked in years, and I would not have thought that the Piggy would be my roommate 🙂 🙂

People were taking photos of us, I guess they don’t see 2 girls doing that often 😉

Angry girlfriend: See, even that girl can do that. How come you can’t? (It was in Chinese 那個女生都可以怎麼你不行?)

Poor weak boyfriend: …

Sorry boyfriend, my roommate is just super strong 🙂

P1100023

For dinner, we were at this restaurant with wifi.

Me (being smart to double check): Do you guys have wifi?

Waiter: Oh yes, but we are not an internet cafe.

Me: … erm Ok so if we eat here, we can use it , yea?

Waiter (with a smile on his face): Oh yes sure.

IMG_2880

We saw everything that is to see in one day. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Astronomical Clock in Old Town, THE BANK. haha.

P1100041

The Prague Castle was super freaky at night especially when there were only 4 people. My camera failed at night :/ but the view was actually quite nice. Very different of course, compared to the beautiful night view that I missed so dearly in Hong Kong.

P1100049 P1100093 P1100100

So there, everything checked in a day. The next day, we went again to these places, but in the morning instead. (Not really morning, but 2pm :P)

P1100124 P1100161

We saw a couple taking wedding photos, aww it was so adorably cute. Photographer was super demanding on the bride though, and she just bent lower and lower and lower…hilarious. The groom just had to stand there, how unfair.

P1100136 P1100140

I have never seen such horrifying statues outside of Churches…imagine that’s what we saw the night before! Explains why I did not dare take too many photos then …

P1100170

The sun refused to shine…sigh.

P1100186

They rolled crepes differently around here! (But I preferred the french ones more, then the Budapest ones. 🙂

Vienna – Part 2

P1090850

In total, we visited a whopping 7 museums in total! After The State Hall library, we went to the Globe Museum and Esperanto Museum. The next day, we made it to the Silvers Apartments, Sisi Museum (My personal favorite) and the Royal Place. Ended with the Papyrus Museum. Main point however, was that we always tea in between these museum visits.
P1090818
P1090819

The Silver exhibition was monotonous, we saw endless plates and glassware that royals used in the past. Not really worth going but I guess that’s why they had to bundle those 3 museums together. Sisi Museum on the other hand, was so thoughtfully designed and Elizabeth (Sisi was her nickname) was such a tragic character.

In fact, I came to realized the entire royal family was completely MESSED up. (I would use another stronger word if not for the fact that my space is appropriate for all ages)

P1090821

At the age of 15, she married the Emperor and due to her previous family brought up that was rather free and unstructured, she felt trapped and overwhelmed by the Royal Palace. She was obsessed with her own physical appearances because that was the only thing in her life that was within her control. She died with an 18′ inches waistline. Her first daughter died a toddler because she didn’t listen to her mom’s advise to not bring along the young kid to travel. Her youngest son committed suicide besides his mistress. Her life ended when she was assassinated in Geneva.

I am a seagull, of no land,

I call no shore my home,

I am bound to no place,

I fly from wave to wave.

That strange feeling when you don’t fit into any part of the world’s puzzle, or perhaps it forgot to leave a spot for me?

I stand alone, as on a star.

I stand alone, as on a star. Despite the unparalleled view from above, I am all but myself. Her words pierced through my heart, and although I am no royal, I could relate to her: doing things that are against our wishes, the feel that our lives are out of our control, the emptiness of feeling lonely…

I wasn’t sure what it was that I learnt from the museum, or the point of setting up this museum with so much sorrows, but it did trigger my melancholic nerve and it was as if at that point in time, I was connected to this extraordinary women hundreds of years ago.

When the sun set, we went to the nearby theme park next to our hotel. (Yes finally a 3 star hotel, why I love Central Europe, and would recommend young travelers to go)

P1090852P1090859

The Ferris wheel, Roller Coaster, Soaring swing, Antique Coca Cola Machines, all radiated in a synchronized color tone under the blasting lights. There was nobody though, and it reminded me of Zombieland. So we left.

It might be a shorter post, but trust me, the poem took me the entire ride from Wien to Prague and more (which was almost 5 hours FYI)

Vienna – home to lovely music and my extra weight gained – Part 1

Right before our bus ride from Budapest to Vienna, we used the rest of our hungarian money, 305 huff to buy 2 hash brown that cost 200 huff each. Yes, the math does not add up so how did that happen?

P1090636

P: One hash brown please.

Nice staff: 200 huff.

P: I have 105 huff left, can I buy anything with it?

Nice staff: No I’m sorry.

P: Well then please have it, we are leaving today and the money would be useless to us.

Nice staff: Sorry, we can’t take tips.

P: hmm… then can you give us one more hash brown? (wink wink)

Nice staff: okaaaay…. 😀 Wala~ Mission impossible checked.

Well, sometimes you just got to ask 😉 Who knew McDonald’s would give out half priced food?

P1090675

We were also outsmarted by our smartphones who reminded us of the change of summer time so we did not miss the bus! And since we won’t be here when they change back …we lost an hour IN LIFE.

P1090667

Vienna greeted us coldly, with snow. And we responded with a nice nap before lunch. (The staff in our hotel folded my pajama :’) so considerate. I tested their kindness by putting 3 shirts on my bed, and all were nicely folded when I came home.

P1090777

We arrived city center and the umbrella we bought was completely ripped by the strong wind…

So first, we went to an elegantly designed library – The State Hall. Those books were not for checking out because the oldest ones dated back 1501! It was like entering a dream of intellectuals, as if simply breathing in the air in there would pump up my brain with knowledge…yea yea yea only if it is that easy to be smart -_-

P1090609   P1090619

Snapped back to reality by the exhibition on the sufferings of Austrian Jews. The letter below was written by an imprisoned husband to his wife, affectionately. One of the few exhibits in English because all materials sending out from the concentration camps had to be censored.P1090616

It brought tears in my eyes when the words I am perfectly all right flooded my sight. May god bring us together again very soon. It was so heartbreaking.

P1090635

I also learnt something new on my first day in Vienna by visiting the Esperanto museum. It is an artificial language created with the vision of uniting mankind and facilitating easier communication around the world. Really interesting concept.

P1090653

Would human beings really love and care about each other more simply because the same language is spoken? Experience told me cultures are just generalizations and they can only give me limited insight at best. Values of individuals are what really connects us.

P1090662

I have also learnt that many words we use today were created rather recently. Serendipity – the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident, It’s origin is surprisingly Sri Lanka – Serendip. Serendipity, the recurring motif of my life. Seek no more, and you shall find 🙂

P1090711

For dinner we tried some Schnitzel and they were oh so good.

P1090671 P1090670

Finally the weather was nice again and we visited the (cafe of) Belvedere palace.

P1090688     P1090703

Tea oriental chai latte, chocolate cake, mochaccino and marble cake. Nom nom nom 🙂

P1090720IMG_2837

Our plan was to shop but turned out all things were closed on Easter Monday except souvenir shops and cake shops. Sigh, So inevitably we were obliged to eat more cake…

P1090754

This, my friend, is Vanilla mousse with raspberry !

P1090762

Seriously, as we were looking for directions, all we saw were these super tricky fonts…who would be able to read them from across the street?

P1090742 P1090743

Angry little biker on the other side Oh come on, when will the light change ?

P1090733 P1090738

It might sound like non-stop eating, but believe me, the situation required us to do so.

Dinner, Pan fried shredded potato with sausage and salad, Viennese Soup (it reminded us of Chinese noodles soup)

P1090769

Final observation: Their metro was so much more modern and sharp compared to Budapest! I guess after all, it’s kind of like the tunnels of Switzerland and Italy 😉

P1090765 P1090677

Some things just never gets old.

P1090776

Buda-Pest Part 2

P1090319P1090413

Part 2 of Budapest started off with a sequence of interruptions:

1) IT RAINED. After snowing hard the day before, it rained hard on us. We managed to arrive the only store in the vicinity that sells umbrella by sharing a tiny one (that I lost eventually). The umbrella broke in a day, but that’s another matter.

P1090378

2) Finally we made it to the metro station, and right at that moment, I wiped my nose, and it was wet and red. In more than a year I have not had nose bleed and on THIS rainy day on SLIPPERY stairs, my nose decided to bleed on me. -_-

P1090397

3) Naive me thought that Citibank must be everywhere in Europe, and turned out they don’t do business in France. Budapest, on the other hand, does have Citi very prominently, but the thing is I  forgot my pin because I did not withdraw money in 3 months. Genius me. When I did recover my pin, the card failed. What the hell?

P1090398

4) Our only “local” friend was locked in her own house and had to postpone meeting us.

P1090538

WHAT a morning.  First stop, the Great Synagogue, largest in Europe. In the center, there buried 2000 dead bodies in 24 graves. They died from the holocaust. My heart pinched a little. Or may be it was a lot.

P1090285

Another beautiful and thankfully less tragic building – the Opera house.

P1090311P1090306P1090296

Then it got super cold and we went for “drumroll”….. TEA!

Hot wine, hot chocolate, pancakes with sweet cottage cheese and with Nutella. Absolutely divine. I have never had crepes (they call them pancakes here, just like in Iceland) with cottage cheese and they are the best !

P1090317  P1090322 P1090333

The cold gave me really bad headaches but we still managed past the never ending lonely path to the heroes square.

P1090338

Supposedly, Easter means all shops closed and nothing much to see. But no! To our most pleasant surprise, there were Easter celebrations everywhere and we came across two lively markets with mouthwatering food and useless but absolutely adorable things.

P1090367P1090423

P1090361

I just have to post this photo, he looked at the camera for me 🙂

P1090362P1090375  P1090371

Crossing the famous chain bridge, we finally stepped foot on Buda. The view was close to breathtaking, but not quite because the weather was bad. What made me love Budapest so much during this trip was not the obvious spectacular view along the river (it was not even close to spectacular on that day);

P1090392P1090394

it was the vibe of the people, the folk songs and dances by bright young men and women, that really made it such a lovely city.

P1090456 P1090451P1090428

That above is a manual basket-go-round for babies! The cutest thing I have ever seen. The kids were giggling and gripping the ropes so tight. It was such a pleasant scene to see; pure simple pleasures. They were throughly happy. That was of course before the ruthless part of time kicks in, namely, growing up.

P1090470P1090471

Those long tubes were chimney cakes~! The name really fits because when it was ready, smoke comes out of the top, as if you are carrying a portable chimney! That rolling thing was super heavy, and they were the only handmade chimney cakes we have seen.

P1090463

This Easter Festival celebration on the Buda castle, everyone wore a huge smile on their faces and joy filled the atmosphere. The buzz, the warm hearted people, pale colors and sweet sweet air made the carnival so cozy and radiant.

P1090437

P1090494P1090551

The famous Mathias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion.

P1090513  P1090517

I decided then that I have to go back to Budapest again, when it is warm and clear.

P1090547

It is my second time to see these thoughtful “Maps” for the blind.

P1090559

I could not put myself into the shoes of the blind at all. All the gorgeous rivers, bewitching night views, charming seashores, they could not see it. What we take for granted, might be what others are dying to have. I felt so lucky at that precise moment. And as much as I believe that life is fair, I also like the idea of karma and even if good happenings don’t come after good deeds, at least there was some kind of good outcomes for someone. At least there was more good in the world for a brief instance because of me.

P1090407

Finally, our last dinner at Budapest and was again another hurdle. WE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH HUFF left… After a lot of math and brain power, we made the most out of our money and cheated a hash brown from McDonald’s the next morning. (More on that later on 😉 ) We almost did not have enough money for ketchup and we couldn’t even buy the pastry with ham…just cheese.

P1090576 P1090579

It started raining again and we had to run to the metro station, without knowing where was the closest one.

P1090349

Turned out it was just right around the corner and just when we were overjoyed by how smart we were to find the metro so swiftly and boarding the train that was almost leaving, the train STOPPED. The light went off and the engine went silent. WE BOARDED IT WHEN IT WAS ALREADY THE LAST STATION.

P1090580

All wagons were separated with no windows! The driver did not know we were still in it…(No wonder there were no one in the trains smartypants…) After some banging on the doors, we panicked. And although I do have some water left that will last me the night, the idea of being stuck there was horrifying. Thank god the light was on again and the engine started again. They used the same train for the other direction. THANK YOU god. P1090582

Budapest does have poorly designed metro, you cannot get to the other side of the platform unless you go back up the street. The escalators were different and super fast.

But either way, we were just glad we made home safe and in one piece.

P1090352
